    Urgent : ID'ing e38 Car Phone Modules

If another subforum is more appropriate, please move this. I honestly have no idea where to put this.

I have always wanted an in-car phone. BAD. Today, I found an 1996 740il in a PnP yard. It was fresh and sporting a complete in car phone system. I'm headed back tomorrow morning for some mazda truck parts, but would like to grab the rest of the system (I already bought the horn). What I need to know is this: How do I externally ID a GSM module? Is the SIM internal? Does anyone have part numbers? I'm at my grandma's and tomorrow will be the last time that I can access this car. Also, my dad works in cellular and we know a lot of people who do as well. I have been assured by a good friend that if this is GSM, we can get it operational.

Any help is appreciated. The wiring side of this doesn't scare me.

    Thanks in advance!

It's probably an analog phone. AFAIK, you can't run an analog phone on current networks.

      One of these? http://bmwfans.info/parts-catalog/E3...?s=84118375038

It should be GSM, atleast in Europe they were. It should have a label somewhere with specifications.
The SIM card will probably be in the trunk, on the left side close to the CD changer.
Iirc, you will need a credit-card sized SIM card (a new SIM not popped out od the big card). Or an old card to use as an "adapter" and tape your SIM card into it.

I currently have that horn. All of the guts are there. Needless to say, I'll be back at the yard tomorrow morning.
