I use a 20gb creative labs portable hard drive that I store MPEG4 format movies on it and MP3 music on it. I bought it on Ebay for $125. I also have a Compaq Ipaq 7530 with a 128mb card in it. But that is a work issue tool.
iPods are nice, but I think a lot of the money you pay is for the "style" and the name. I am pretty pleased with my Creative Labs Nomad Zen Xtra, but its a but too big. That rio pictured above looks really sweet and comes with some nice sized hard drives.
after messing with both the ipod 15 gig and mini....the size difference is a lot greater than I had previously thought. Mini it is, if i decide to spring for one
Be aware of jogging with hard drive players, they tend get jostled a lot. If you buy any hard drive player, please get an extended warranty!! You will thank me if you need to send it back. I had to send my Karma back to Rio because the drive died (fuck Hitachi!!). Rio is having a lot of problems with the Karma's drive right now, so I would stay away. The player kicks ass, but hitachi is letting Rio down. It took me a month to get a new player. Better yet, if you buy a hard drive player, buy it at a local store (best buy, Circuit City...) so that if your player breaks, you just run over to the store and they hand you a brand new one. No hassles with Apple or Rio or Iriver...
yeah, I'm planning on buying a 'protection plan' with my player...I have one for my digital camera, and I dropped it after about 6 months. Since the store no longer had the exact camera, they gave me credit for the value of the camera towards a new one, I was very happy.
