Dammit. I didn't know either of these guys, but I'm sad they're gone. My thoughts are with their friends and families.Originally posted by Andy.BWhenever I am about to make a particularly questionable decision regarding a worryingly cheap diy solution, I just ask myself, "What would Ether-D do?"

Thanks for the well wishes guys it is appreciated. Like I said earlier I know a lot of guys on here have sourced parts from Shane (Screen name Shane Snyder) and/or knew him so I thought I should let people know. I would also like to apologize if I misrepresented what happened. They weren't racing, they were riding together on their way to work, but police have reported that "excessive speed" is strongly suspected.
The thing is, they weren't stupid kids. They were grown men. Tony wasn't a bad driver, he was quite the contrary; a track trained driver with plenty of formal experience. The car wasn't some POS e30 that hadn't been maintained. I watched him spend six months worth of weekends at the shop completely rebuilding it from the ground up with top of the line race quality or near race quality components. The only thing original on the car was the sheet metal and the only thing he installed on the car that wasn't brand new was the s52. Even then, that was rebuilt before he dropped it in.
My point is, on paper this should not have happened to them, but, freaky things happen in an uncontrolled environment. If excessive speed was the catalyst then hopefully myself and others can learn from their mistake.
Again, thanks for all the well wishes guys I do appreciate it. Also, thanks for letting me use this forum as way of sorting through my thoughts on what has happened in the last 24 hours.

A seasoned driver in what sounds to be a well built car truly a freak accident. Again sorry for your loss

Shawn basically said it all. The stretch of road this occurred on is badly designed and I've gotten loose on it more times than I can count - sometimes intentionally sometimes accidentally. Tony was a good driver in a well built car. It was a freak accident and he couldn't have been going more than 50mph when he lost control. Any other time there might have been nobody on this stretch of road and the incident would have just been an embarrassing spin out. Unfortunately there was another driver that day and she was probably doing 50mph. I saw the car less than 5 minutes after the wreck - it looked like they went sideways at 75mph into a pole. But of course they didn't.
This was a horrible loss - to Stauffer Auto, to the BMW community, and of course to all their friends and family. It's surreal. I keep expecting Shane to walk through the door carrying a triple espresso and wearing a Snap-On sweatshirt and go "Hey man! Guess what I just bought!? 'Trina is gonna kill me! Ha ha!" Hard to believe that will never happen...and just when things were going so well.
Hope nobody minds me posting these pics of them in memorial...

I'm still stunned. Just got a call from his fiancé. I can still picture him at Guten trading parts. He was a good friend. Often staying at my house when he came to town. Very big loss to the community. May he rest in peace.sigpic
