i think his price is fair. however, i have a shitload of parts cars and smorgasbord of 5 great local junk yards to choose from.
the guy does sound like a bit of a dick, but it also sounds like he's tired of craigslist jackasses lowballing him.
if i was in need of a 4 door m42 car, i would at least go and have a look at it.
definitely check the timing chain to see if it rattles on start up. thats about 600 bucks worth of parts.sigpic

If i were you id go look at it. M42s are great engines. Reliable and get good MPG. And its A Slicktop so you don't have to worry about the sunroof leaking or going bad1991 318i Slicktop - Sold

Most important thing to do is get under car with flashlight to see how rusty it is and see if there are any signs of a major impact. If it has lots of rust or signs of big wreck, forget it.
