They are making even numbers 2 doors (2er, 4er 6er) and odd numbers four doors (3er, 5er, 7er)
They have put "M" badges on cars in the past that are not "m" cars.

And then they come out with the 2-series Active Tourer, which is a 5-door MPV.
And the 6-series Gran Coupe? 4-door.
I like the odd=sedan, even=coupe layout, but then they should stick with it.
Make a GT version (taller basically) of their sedans if they like, and make a Gran Coupe version too (sleeker 4-door), but then don't call the 5-series based Gran Coupe a 6-series.
And for the 1-series based Active Tourer? Don't call it a 2-series.
Oh and if it's a true M car, put the M before the number. I think it would be pretty easy to distinguish between the two M1s in everyday conversation.
Although the BMW MX5 (X5 M) would sound pretty funny.
Basically this is what I'm talking about:
Suffixes:
GT - Gran Tourer (taller sedan/hatch)
AT - Active Tourer (5-door MPV)
GC - Gran Coupe (4-door "coupe")
Prefixes:
X - offroad thingy
M - awesome division
And just to keep things from making complete sense, they could leave the Z cars out of this system.
