With air tools is is all about CFM at rated pressure (usually 90psi). A secondary factor is duty cycle of the compressor. To run a good quality 1/2" impact wrench you will need about 4cfm@90psi. That will be a 5hp twin cylinder compressor or better. The home shop class compressors are typically only rated for 50% duty cycle, but industrial types will have 100% duty cycle and higher CFM rating. They will be 220vac only and spin the compressor somewhat slower, which makes it last longer. They can be single or two stage, with two stage units having higher ratings.
A vertical 60gal compressor has about the same foot print as a 20gal horizontal, but is far more capable. You will find that you need more of a compressor than you want to buy, but spending more money once will be the cheaper option in the long run.
For air tools, spend the money and get pro type tools. The cheap stuff doesn't work well or last long.
