I bought a shell without a title how can I obtain one

SO ill keep the story short, i purchased a e30 shell from auto technical school teacher who retired, the car originally came to the school to be repaired but the motor was shot so the owner donated the car to the teacher for education purposes but he never got the title. when the teacher i purchased the car from retired he took the cars that were donated to him (914 e30 and a Renault) and had them up for sale.

I do not have a bill of sale i do not remember the guys name, all i know is i need to obtain a title somehow. I have seen services that are supposed to do all the leg work for you but i was just wondering if any one had any suggestions on how to go about it

I do have a extra title from a e30 that no longer exist that i could use but id rather do this the legal way

There is a company that can get you a title. Let me ask my friend about details. He is doing the same.

I know in CA if someone is the registered owner and lost the title, they could sign a form called "request for paperless title" and if you have that form with their signature and car info it is considered to be a equivalent to a title when transferring ownership

You should talk to the DMV and then try to contact your teacher since you'll probably need him to sign a few things. If you at least have a bill of sale maybe the DMV could just transfer the name without a title. Who knows

Moto Recycle is your trusted lost Motorcycle Title Replacement Service.

I think they also do cars. I figure you could at least call them and ask. If they dont they might be able to send you in the right direction.

They do cars. Email them and ask, they were very responsive when I inquired about getting a title for my motorcycle project.

The title service is mainly for vehicles that were never registered though the DMV, such as motorcycles destined for racing (but could have been legally registered at the time they were in production).

That said, ThatOneEuroE30 did it the right way, and I'd recommend starting there.

Email the DMV. They're actually pretty good about getting back to you within a few days.

                Use this email:
                dmv.phonecenter@ct.gov

IIRC, it's a pain in the ass, and they will require more paperwork than what you have (which is nothing). I believe they also charge you a percentage of what the car is worth, but don't quote me on that.

I almost had to go through something similar. When I bought my M3, there was a mistake on the previous title, and they wouldn't accept it. I had to trace things back to the previous sale, which was done by a dealer that was long out of business. Thank god that the dealer I bought it from just happened to know the owner of the other dealer (who had retired), and we sorted it out. Anyways, contact DMV.

was the process that easy? can you elaborate a bit more on this, did you need any forms or some sort of proof of ownership.

fiveightandten- the car was registered in mass and im in CT so i feel like i would have to email mass dmv in order to take care of the issue unless the car you purchased was also out of state

Not sure cars that have been donated for education can be titled again.

You would need to check with the local DMV but you will need a signed request for duplicate title or at least need a bill of sale from the last registered owner or a signed title of anyone after.

It really varies by state. Here it is rather easy from what I here but near St. Louis and Kansas City counties it is a bit harder.

Process took a week from going to court house to getting title in mail. My proof of owner ship was the po being with me. As mentioned though I'm not entirely sure do rated cars can be titled again.

You're going to register it in CT, so you need to contact CT DMV to see what they will require regardless. Shoot them an email at that above address. It beats standing in line for 2 hours.

If you need a duplicate title, it would be MA that you contact. But I would contact the CT DMV to be sure of exactly what it is they will accept, before jumping through any hoops for MA DMV to get documents you may or may not need, or documents that may or may not be useful with the CT DMV.

My M3 was bought here in CT, not out of state. There would've been money involved, so i'd definitely contact them here in CT to see what you're up against. IIRC, it would've cost me about $1200. This was in 2006, and the car was worth a decent amount at that point. A 30 year old shell won't be anywhere near as bad as that (it was based on book value).
