Hmmmm..... What's wrong with this picture?

    Can you see it yet?

    How about now?

Had to go and change every single eccentric back around the right way.

Thankfully the valve stems were good and by flipping them back around the right way the eccentric is running on fresh metal now, not in the old worn grooves so there should be no problems running them like this. Some of them were "adjusted" and running right on the hole in the eccentric. I mean, seriously, anyone with a hint of mechanical aptitude would suspect something is a miss, let alone wondering how the hell you move the eccentric in place and hold it while you tighten the lock nut. Motor was a little noisy, but nowhere near as bad as I've heard M20's. Supposedly worked on by a mechanic "with over 30 years experience".

He's saying rotate the eccentric so the lobe part on the bottom of it is facing outward and the valve is making contact with the inner side. In that picture, the lobe is facing inward and the valve is contacting the outer side.

I'm assuming from his suggestion, that as the angle of the rocker arm changes, this makes a difference.

FWIW, I just did my valve clearance. My engine has 69K on it and the valves had never been adjusted to the best of my knowledge or observation. The lobes were all facing out.

It's the colour of replacement hose made by goodyear, it's like a black reinforced layer with another red layer on top. I think it denotes their oil resistant range or something because I've got some 5/8 hose that is the same colour. I've got nearly 1/2 a roll left so im going to use it, even if it looks funny. EFI hose is expensive :(

Yeah, I just popped the eccentric in and took a photo. I realised it was around the wrong way afterwards when I pushed down to set the clearance and I ended up with MORE gap. Should be the other way round, up to increase, down to decrease. Thought I had taken more photos, but when I came to resize them it was the only photo I had showing the hole around the right way and the wear on the top of the eccentric from where it had been running previously. Thought I had taken more, but I just didn't want to pull the rocker cover off again to take another photo. Not after using a new gasket and using a little silicone on the tops of the shaft plugs to make sure they seal. Good eye though :)

True, O P has effectively made the rocker "shorter" may even bind up if it makes its way off the stem tip.

The firs pic i suspect the eccentrics didn't need to be flipped over, just rolled away from center.

The only way to get them back to where they should have been would have been to compress the valve spring to rotate it back under. If you went back the other way the eccentric sat way outside the rocker.

I'm sure BMW meant for eccentrics to go one way not the other, so maybe this will help.

"10. Once you've released the 10mm bolt, put a 3mm allen key into the small adjuster hole and then slide the feeler gauge underneath. You now need to tighten the eccentric by moving it towards you for the exhaust valves or away from you for the inlet valves until you feel a slight resistance when you try and slide the feeler gauge in and out."

EDIT: Adjust valves whilst standing at the right side of vehicle.
