Anyone ever do a retractable cupholder?

With the cupholder thread going on now, made me think about my idea that I still have not put into action.

My mom's old subaru outback had some cool retractable cupholders. retract right into the dash. was thinking about retrofitting something like this in my e30

has anyone ever done any cool setups using a retracting cupholder from another car?

I havnt seen it, but the VW ones that pop out from the HVAC would probably fit in pretty easy.

Heh, I go oooold school. I bought a $0.99 plastic thingie that slides into the driver or passenger side window and just put my cup in there, if I have one. But usually I don't carry any cups so I toss the cupholder into the glove box. It's actually starting to deform the rubber seal at the base of the window. :(

Yeah, but if you have tint and roll your window up/down with it attached it fuxzors it up. Thats what the P/O did to mine...

Or you can just use the removable unit from the E32/34 and then you just toss it in the glove box when you arent using it. The best part, it doesnt do any damage to your dash to use it.

Ah, no tint on my car so it's not a problem. Anyway, I only use the cupholder after I get some take-out or fast food. Then I go home and toss it back in the glove compartment. Usually, I carry a bottle of water in the car with me, and that fits nicely in the little tray by the e-brake.

I think Im going to invest in one of those arm rests that have the cup holders built in.

Get the cupholder, then go get some of those urethane bumpers for drawers or under cutting boards at Home Depot. Put those bumpers on the outer lip. Then it grabs onto the crap tray next to the e-brake better than it holds onto the lip on the E32/34.

Click "Show all" and it will show pics of the underside of the cupholder.

Those subaru cupholders are crap. cheap, flimsy and worst location ever. just try to adjust the hvac/radio controls with a soda in one of those!

I got an armrest in the middle above the e-brake. it slides back and forth to adjust to your comfort. Underneath it is a cupholder that slides out from the armrest. The e-brake doesn't get in the way either. The cup slids in and the ebrake pulled up touches the side of the cup, but it's not a problem. Personally I think it's really cool. I wish they had that on e46 BMW's so I could get the eurotray but still use a cupholder when I need it.

I'll take pics if you guys are interested.
