    HELL YEA.
Thats all I got to say.
I just talked to the shop supervisor and hes going to put me through BMW STEP!!!
I will start my apprenticeship soon, once the dealer has switched hands (it sold) and then I will be off to STEP. I can't hardly wait!!!
I have been keepingm fingers crossed for MONTHS AND MONTHS about this, and finally it has happened. I am soo stoked.

I looked into it, and for $22k I decided to pass, as I can get into BMW STEP by going through my local city college for $1k and have the same education. It is widly thought at various dealerships I have been to that UTI Graduates are the worst techs they have ever seen. They end up quitting or getting fired in 6 months or less. There is no guarentee that you can get into BMW Step with UTI's program either, so its not the best way to go.
Thanks. That sure does say a lot though coming from someone who's opinion is based off of other people's. :?

IMHO UTI has a good program, the only problem is that a lot of the people there dont take it seriously. Keep in mind, 90% of the STEP students at my campus are UTI grads. Obviously I dont have to say how well regarded STEP graduates are in dealerships...

You know you shouldnt knock it until you've had more experience or tried it.
For example, I could slam you for parting out a perfectly good M3, or fubaring an S14 by cracking water jackets.... but I dont know the whole story. Myth, legend, gossip point is, I'm not judging YOU by what i've HEARD.

One dealerships experience with UTI grads doesnt speak for everyone.

Irregardless, congrats on the nomination for STEP.

I got a lot of presentations in Auto Mechanics from UTI, Northwestern Ohio tech school, etc. If the slack-jawed locals in my class went to UTI, then they would be some crappy students. You can't really judge the integrity of the program by the trouble students.

I think Ryan and James both could be correct in some ways. I don't personally know much about UTI, just some of their potential students. Ryan just probably knew the slackers and the idiots who went there, and not some of the harder working guys, like James (I'm assuming.)

Ryan, how do you get a dealer to sponsor you into the STEP program?

First, let me just say that I am going off of what I heard, and what I saw, when I went to UTI over this last summer. I did not like their program, they seemed like they wanted to sell me into the program and make money off me, not help make another good tech.
I chose not to go to UTI after calling BMW STEP and asking them what I should do. They told me to do exactly what I did: go to my local city college and work at my local dealer. Get sponsored and do the 10 week BMW STEP Program. The guys at STEP told me they thought I was smarter and better off doing that, it saved me $20k and I got the same education, and almost a shoe-in chance at going to STEP. UTI can make no guarentees about getting you into STEP, and that really scared me. you get one chance, and if you miss it, thats it. You spent 22k on a school that didn't let you achieve your personal goal. I was not willing to take that chance.

Its your decision on what school you go to and what you make of your education. Sure, you can go to UTI and be the top of your class and get into BMW, or you can go to city college and bust your ass there and work at a dealer and get to your goal that way.

I choose the best path for me, and it worked out.
                End of my rant 8)

PS: I did not mean to offend anyone with my bashing of UTI, I was speaking my mind on personal expierence and making my own judgement after visiting 2 of their facilities.

Let me just set this stright a bit by saying that the car that was parted was NOT mine, and I merly helped part it out. It was the best decision for the owner at the time and I supported him. I did not crack a water jacket, I was out of town and the owner let a friend work on the car, and he cracked it.
That's the truth and I am sticking to it.

I think of you as an exception. I didn't say you were a fucking idiot. I said the guys that were hired at my dealer and the VW dealer here in Santa Barbara, were fired or quit because they couldn't handle the job.
