    NY State Emissions Inspection Exempt???

My car is an 89, so it is now 25 years old. According to the NY DMV website, all cars older than 25 years are exempt from emissions inspections.

Does this mean that I can simply take the sticker off of my car and never have to get it inspected again? My sticker expires at the end of this month, so I'd like to know if I have to pony up the $30 for an inspection, or if I am now in the clear.

    No. Emissions exempt, not safety.

inspection is more than emissions... they make sure the car is road worthy.

        It's only $21. Not a huge amount.

I am a licensed nys inspector, and frankly, if your car doesn't pass, you shouldn't be driving it anyway. A nys inspection isn't terribly rigorous.

Edit: a visual/obd2 emissions (safety inspection is $21. A safety only inspection is $10.

Thanks for the tip. I have no worries about my car passing, I'm just kicking myself for waiting until the end of the month and my schedule is tight. I'll make time for it this weekend, and then not have to worry about it for a year.

Get it done asap. Not having an inspection is now a serious ticket w/fine and maybe even points (correct me of i'm wrong there). Days of the " get it done within 24 hours" are over.

They set roadblocks up JUST to hand out tickets, if you cannot handle renewing something like this...then you will get a nice ticket.

$75.00 ticket with no points in Suffolk County. My brother got 2 on the same day last month.

Understood, getting it done this weekend so I can get it in before the end of the month.

I rarely drive the car in winter and March just snuck up on me.

Just be happy that it'll be next to impossible to fail. When i took my e39 to get plugged in it threw a code on my way to the shop...Literally 1 mile before I got there. So back I went to expedite an order for the GD secondary air pump and valve.

You can get a car through the obd2 inspection with 1 or 2 monitors not set (depending on the year), so it is usually possible, and actually pretty easy, to get a car to pass inspection, even with faults, by clearing the codes and then avoiding the drive cycle conditions that trigger the engine light on the way to the inspection.

If you have a hard fault, like an electrical short, none of these are going to work, but if its a soft/conditional fault, like a clogged evap valve or evap leak, you can work your way around it.

Secondary air system/EGR fault? They only run on a cold engine at startup. Get engine up to temp and clear codes (even better, do it with the engine already running and don't turn it off).

Evap system fault? Usually (but it depends on the system) a full or almost empty gas tank won't run evap tests before the other monitors set. Fill tank, clear codes, and drive until other monitors set.

o2 sensors - your kind of stuck fixing. It's possible to get everything else to set except catalyst efficiency monitors, but kind of a crap shoot.

Whats the validity that the computer reads that codes have been cleared?

There are essentially two sets of data the NYSVIP inspection machine looks for: The presence of any engine codes, and the status of readiness monitors.

If you clear the codes, it also clears the readiness monitors.

Different monitors run under different conditions in a drive cycle, so if you are selective and careful with how you operate the vehicle after clearing the codes, you can get some monitors to set without giving the ones that you know will fail a chance to self test. That way, as far as the NYSVIP system knows, there are no SES codes set, and the required number of readiness monitors ARE set.

BUT, if you clear the codes right before you pull into the shop, none of the readiness monitors will be set, so the inspection will fail. Not because the codes were cleared, but because the monitors haven't run.

Chips in the glass? If they are in the path of the wipers, but under a certain diameter they are fine. I forgot what that is offhand, but it's a couple inches at least.
