    Oh God

Well I am not sire what I was on when I was looking but I replaced the cylinder head on my new to me 89 325i and somewhere read to torque the head bolts to 75 ft lbs. Well I saw on a thread some one talking about the 22 90* 90* (right way of doing it.) So how stupid have I been? Just replace the bolts are are the block threads likely effed. Luckily I did not start the motor this way.

just loosen all of them and start over.

Would that really work after they have stretched though? I'd also be worried about the bolts strength after over torquing them

They are strech bolts and I wouldn't try to re use them. Buy a new set and replace them one by one in the sequence specified in the Bentley torquing each one correctly as you go.

The block threads are strong, buy another set of head bolts and do it again the right way.

75 is not much. I'm sure it's safe to reuse the head bolts. I'm sure the final torque is higher then the 75 you put them at. I'm not really even sure they are TTY bolts. Subaru engines call for degree torque specs but the bolts are not really TTY. They use the degree torque method to compensate for creep. Creep is when the bolt head tries sticking to the aluminum surface and makes that loud clicking sound. That sticking will give a higher then true torque reading before breaking loose. This may or may not be the safe case with BMW.

DO NOT reuse the bolts. Spend the few dollars on new bolts and follow the manual.

Try and torque them properly. worse case one wont' hold torque and you'll have to replace them all. im certain the bolts end up at wayyyy more torque than 75 lbs anwyays

OP, seems like your gut is telling you to buy another set of bolts. I'd go with that. Cheap insurance, and you'll have no doubts.

                    Per Bentley (6 cylinder engines):

                    Torx head bolts-
                    Stage 1: 22 ft-lbs
                    Stage 2: 90*
                    Stage 3: 90*

                    Hex head bolts-
                    Stage 1: 30 ft-lbs
                    Stage 2: 44 ft-lbs after waiting 15 minutes
Stage 3: 25* after running engine for 25 minutes

Make sure you go in the correct order, starting in the middle and radiating out while alternating side to side.

I see where I found the 75 ft lbs. I am building a 2.7i turbo motor to throw in over the summer and guys using studs said 70-80 ft lbs. Yes I plan to buy new studs

No using bolts. I am just fixing this motor to play with the car a few months and get it to body and paint
