I bought myself a Volvo 240 Wagon for a Winter Beater for $600, needed a blower motor and its generally ugly. But its got a Fuckload of room and Ive beat it relentlessly and its still fine.
MPG kinda sucks (23MPG at most)
Might sell it and get something with more MPGs and a Manual sometime down the road.

True story, my brother in law once drove his 2003 Corrola for 30,000 miles without even looking at the dipstick. 30,001 miles it spun a bearing. But, 30,000 miles!!!

The operative word here is *commuter*. In my case, I finally realized that my commute is going to suck regardless; doing it in a kewl-ish car isn't going to make it any more enjoyable. Hence the super civic. Cheap to run and ultimately disposeable. It sits all weekend while I drive my BMWs around.
For a "shitbox commuter" (read: shitty commute, second car) fuck an e36 or any BMW really. It didn't sound to me like the op was giving up his e30 for a Corolla. I work on BMWs for a living; I came so close to buying a kinda ratty, but mechanically sound e36 before the Honda fell into my lap. Might have been ok, but I now know that the civic is a far better tool for what I need it to do.

sometimes I think my daily should get more love since it does more for me (work, groceries etc.). While my e30 just gobbles cash and time that I should be spending doing other things.
but then I think no, if I had a nicer daily I wouldn't have a need for the e30 anymore.

Personally, I have decided that turning a corner is too fun to have a daily that can't do it--at least a little.

My dad had an 81 Volvo with a poorly adjusted carb that would run rich. \as a result, time would go by and he'd forget to check the oil. \sure enough, after hearing strange noises on several instances, turned out there was hardly a drop of oil on the dip stick
I had a 93 Metro for a month once. Car was purchased with no coolant so I filled it with coolant and kept driving. Sure enough, after a few days all the coolant was gone again (not spilled either...maybe burnt?) either way, I could see that that wasn't the first time that happened. So I finally ditched that POS. Too ghetto for me!

someone said earlier e36. They are dirt cheap and decent daily cars

And just because two engines have aluminum heads doesn't mean they both will suffer the same problems. The long straight-6 in most every BMW is far more susceptible to thermal expansion issues than the short 4 bangers in all the japanese cars and besides, most japanese cars have aluminum blocks which will expand at the same rate as the head.
BMW's may be hard to kill but they're not harder to kill than a Honda and Hondas are sure a lot cheaper to keep running.
