BMW Wagons : Family Car Worthy?

Rather than getting a Suburban or Expedition, I thought'd be better to reach back into time for a wagon to haul three kids and three medium dogs for family trips. Roof rack atop for gear. 5 humans occupy first two rows, pups in the cargo.

The E39s decent wagons? One locally is still asking 5k with 230k on the clock!

Or a Volvo Wagon.. love the look of the XC90s.

I can do a brand new big rig three row SUV but would rather see the money invested on a slice of property...

XC90s suck more dick than Kim K.

3 series wagons are kinda worthless as wagons. Not enough room.

I've found my e34 wagon to be just right. E39 would be even better....I have to move the passenger seat up in the e34 to fit the rear-facing car seat.

I own an e39 wagon. I love the space and look of the thing. But its been nothing but problems for me. Its currently parked at my pops house with a mystery no start issue (injectors wont spray). I now daily an 89 4dr ix and miss the shit out of the wagon. Lately ive been thinking about bailing on the ix for an e34 wagon. Wagons are cool. I dont know much about modern volvos but you may have better luck with reliability there. Im sure someone else will chime in with more info.

The car seat fitment is a real issue. Three kids under 5. My 07 Legacy was a wonderful wagon but the car seats required the front chairs to be eating the dash. I can get by with two rows IF that second row has the space.

Were any Volvos ever good? Seems a lot of garbage.

Or is an X5 a good idea? Prefer wagons but my idea is, I could get a great car with plenty of money left to spruce it up well before I touch the skyhigh SUV MSRPs I am considering..er, considered.

Wagons are just sexy to me.

Which engine do you have issues with in that E39?

528 or 525 wagon would be my choice

5 humans and 3 canines in a wagon wouldn't leave much room for cargo, unless you load up the roof or tow something. We went the minivan route and got a Toyota sienna. It was a great vehicle but packing for a trip was a challenge, even without dogs. Three young children seemed to require an extraordinary amount of stuff. Strollers, toys, etc. And once they're a little older and they want to bring friends? Forget it. Sold it and went with a Chevy suburban which has been great. We are fortunate enough to have enough vehicles that it is used primarily for trips, and as a backup when another vehicle is down for repair.

                What Suburban you get?

I was looking at the new Ford Transit, a 10 or 12 passenger. Thinking any more kids or their friends, and we got it. Plenty of space. Wife hates the Transit. She says Expedition or Suburban... and I can get the bells and whistles. So I think Expedition EL King Ranch yadda yadda....

Then I think, I'd rather put 50k towards a piece of mountain property not a truck...and Ill find a family trip car for cheap.

Daily for her will be my Flex Limited AWD. Selling her 09 Jetta.

A transit with the diesel motor would be pretty solid. Or wait for the 2015 expedition with the 3.5 ecoboost. Also screw the king ranch, just get the limited, unless you're into that whole country western 2 tone kinda stuff.

For my business I just purchased a 2014 Toyota Sequoia ... we have a large family as well. Your idea of putting that money towards a piece of property was spot on ... I wanted to do the same but we use the truck to haul kids around so it was necessary.
