what to look for in M44s

so i just bought a 318ti

has a blown headgasket im just wondering what are the things to look out for.
and i dont like the fact that the coolant pipes are plastic does anthing from the m42 switch over?

PM my friend 'Brilliantrot 318is' he has a pretty nice ti and he's gone through the m44. Also has rebuilt his m42 on his e30. So he could tell you the differences
