    ASE Prep Help

So I've decided to finally sign up for A4 – Suspension & Steering A5 – Brakes. This will be my first time taking an ASE test and would like to get some advice. My job (Pep Boys-mechanic) currently pays for the tests and offers some study material but id ultimately like to purchase a study book. So with that said are there any specific ones that are good? Any other test prep resources? General advice on the actual test taking? All input is greatly appreciated.

i did mine during college so i had plenty of study material from that but honestly if you have had any formal training or general mechanical aptitude/knowledge and master the practice tests on the website your good to go. they are really not that hard, but then again i don't bother anymore, some places pay you more if you get them but that's about it as far as I've seen, then again I'm just not fond of taking tests and paying for them lol.

You can get a lot of info from the NATEF people. NATEF is the ASE society but deals with county vocational schools. I have my NATEF and it helps later with ASEs. You can also find a TON of info by searching, "James Holderman ASE" on google. Just my

Like most everyone is saying if you have the experience working on cars and practice the practice tests you should be fine. When I was taking mine I took three at a time and I passed all of them fairly easily. But I had heard horror stories about the A2 automatic transmission/transaxle test. So I bought a study manual from here https://www.passthease.com/ It is very in depth and they used to have a money back guarantee if you failed. A2 was by far the most difficult in my opinion. Good luck.

just that we get kids right out of the local tech school come to work for our shop that are ASE Master Tech certified and cant do basic electrical diagnostics (never mind advanced) and definately cant do much else on their own (so much for that training to pass the tests having anything to do with the real world). i get tired of babysitting them....ASE Master Techs my A$$ ,means nothing as far as im concerned.....

Delmar has the best books I've seen. Never would've passed A2 without it. Check your local library, they may have them there and you won't have to buy any.

I agree. We hired some guy who went to vocational school, has a degree in automotive repair, etc. He told us that his schooling gave him the equivalent experience of a 10 year master tech. That was probably the line UTI gave him to get him to waste $35k on his "education" there. I wouldn't trust him to put air in my tire, much less try to figure out a basic diagnostic on anything. His total lack of experience combined with his ignorance and incompetence unfortunately is all to common with a lot of graduates. I didn't even know it was possible to take 4 hours to mount and balance 4 new tires on a Toyota, but I do now!

sad isnt it ,and the industry is screaming for decent Tech's as us old fogies retire , how are they going to take care of these new high tech cars with lube techs! oh i know they just plug it into the factory in germany like BMW does and someone tells the parts puller what to change . That or like everything else it just gets thrown away when i breaks (the day of the disposable car is here) ,job security for the new car industry...just how they want it
