Anyone ever do any easy disconnect engine wire harness?

    Anyone ever do any easy disconnect engine wire harness?

    I'm fed up with a certain level of bull crap I have to go through everytime I pull an engine. I absolutely despise having to pull the wiring harness through the firewall and all that fun stuff... so... no replies please saying "its easy, what are you bitchin' about". I want to make an easy disconnect plug that's weather proof and is in the engine bay, so when I pull the engine, which tends to be more common than you might think, I can just unplug and remove, then reinstall and plug back in.

    Anyone have any experience with this kinda stuff? Know where I can get some really quality male/female plug connectors (better than what you can get at Radio Shack)?

    Seriously, it IS easy- or maybe you're doing it wrong??

    Unplug ECU, unplug a couple of other connectors, slide ECU plug thru hole in firewall, unbolt a couple of other wires, and your done.


    What specifically would you change to use other connectors??/

        Its just a pain in the ass to me... the e30 isn't too bad passing through the firewall, but other models are a fucking pain. And why keep going through all the crap in the interior and dealing with that grommet bullshit when i can just plug and unplug.

          Sorry, but it's just not all that hard.

          I'd rather stuff the grommet thru the firewall than have to disconnect the 50 wires that go thru the grommet. Don't you think you are much more likely to cause problems by putting connectors on all those wires that go thru the firewall??

            dude jared, if you're pulling motors so much the wiring is a hassle, i'd seriously take a look and the lumps you're installing :p

                From the sounds of it, I don't have any experience with taking out or putting in and engine, but I know some about wiring. And to get all the connectors and then wire all that up that you are talking about, then I think you are talking about a lot of time, and effort that probably wont be worth it. Thats just my opinion, but I don't have much experience with that, so I could be wrong.

                  you could look at some mil-spec wiring quick disconnects... i know some racing teams use them for rapid engine changes... however i doubt that you pull engines anough to make it worth your worry... you would seriously imho need to pull an engine more than 15 times a year to make it worth it

                    the BPG e36 has a quick disconnect engine harness, but it also has a fully custom engine and body harness, its basically one big plug with all the wires in it, male and female, boom boom, easy to undo. good idea, but prolly not worth the effort on a street car.
