e34 frame rust - should I be worried?

Thinking about buying a 1989 535i. Should I be worried about this rust? By far, this is the worst on the whole car. Door jambs and the rest of the underside look good.
However, this area near the trans on the frame rails looks bad, like it could worsen and expand over the years. Thoughts?

Difficult to see. need more lighting then the flash of the camera and it needs to be cleaned to reveal the extent. expect it to be atleast 20% worse then it looks

e34 frame rust - should I be worried?

Everything is repairable at a cost, but with rust it just gets worst overtime. So I would repair it now than later.

My last E34 had less rust than that on top, but the entire subframe mount area was just gone, 80% rusted away.

Iceberg? Yeah, for sure. I think Nick nailed it, buy a different car.

Thanks. I decided to walk away from the car. It is actually an Alpina, a real one, with the m30 and an auto. Despite the rarity and low price, the rust and auto made it not worth it to me. I hope it goes to a good home. The seller is a great guy.

wtf!!!????? alpina???? really??? how the heck can you not include that "minor" detail?

when the car is rare as that, some things like rust can be worth fixing. we gave you advice on a run of the mill car. in order for us to give you good advice we need to know the details.

I didn't want people to be swayed or distracted by the fact that it was alpin. I was only interested in feedback on the rust. I understand your feelings though, i still think about this car

the problem is that e34's are a dime a dozen. you can just about throw a rock anywhere and hit one. alpina e34's are very much another story. that pic you posted is obviously rust on a floorpan, however, it is pretty crappy pic. is that the only place under the car you saw rust?

Yes i understand the rarity. I have spent 2 weeks researching this car and alpinas in general. The math on price nor my desire added up. Feel free, anyone, to ask about this car becausei spent alot of time on it. I really hate rust so it didn't work out. I have tons more pics from the selle. This she worst place of rust
Rest of car was pretty clean. Only other troubling rust was the alpina exhaust system near the cat. Treat w good body wise. Mechanically needs f shocks and brakes. Plus some other little things.
