Amazing car, no doubt, but $/hp is way off the scale. Also talked with Frank and a couple other people and they convinced me that the S38 doesn't really like boost (yes, I've seen the Swedish car but I think they spent the equivalent of that country's GDP). Then there was the shitty Getrag 280 tranny that was starting to die and the typical upgraded 265 tranny was a $3500 conversion.

Then I was going to put the E34 M30 motor in the E24 body, but I was looking at about $6k that needed to be spent on the suspension and brakes, not to mention I wanted to do something to the motor to up the horsepower. Then Permit's E34 came up that was only $4800 (cheaper than renewing the E24) and would be a direct fit for my worked over M30. Plus it was in nicer shape than the E24. So I'm taking this road.

 for originality, hope you have fun refinancing your house.
Thanks ;), I love being somewhat original.

Current cost projections on the swap are around $15K, not counting the 6speed if I decide to go with it, (need to calculate gearing again)

If I can find a Getrag D in good shape for a decent price I'll get it, but its not worth spending over 5 grand on that tranny just to have a 6th gear =)

9000RPM? Jesus, wonder what bottom end work he did to achieve that.

Actually the SOHC version "only" went to 7800rpm and produced 340hp. 92mm bore, 80mm stroke. The E34 M30 has an 86mm stroke and I can bump the bore to 92.5mm or more. Some engine work and I could definitely do better than 340hp... work on an ITB setup for fun... yeah! another project!

          How about this CRAZY idea:

Get a used, good S38B36 for $4500-5000 and whip it back into the car, and sell it. You won't have to mess around with custom fabbing exhaust downpipes, transmission brackets, etc. Also, you'll have a more powerful version of the S38 with higher compression than the B35.

If you want to fool around with custom work, you can try your hand at fabbing a custom exhaust. You won't really piss of the purists, it will still have an S38, and plenty of power out of the box. Also the resale value won't be hurt as badly as a Frankenshark with a weird engine combo. More people would be willing to buy a S38B36 Shark than an S50 shark, I bet.

Some guy on Roachfly is selling two S38s, each for $4500. Maybe I'm just getting prematurely old, or maybe it's because I'm knee deep in a fairly expensive swap project of my own, but to me, the S38 (re)swap makes the most sense to me.
