Fuel System HELP on winter driver...

Hello guys, as title says i need help with my 1984 318i with the 1.8 in it. just the other day the car cut out on me has i was driving. was completely unsure what happened. got it to start back up and made it about a block further and it didn't it again. After that second time i couldn't get it to start. i waited about 10 minutes and decided to try again, started and made it another block before dying which happen to be a part store.

after thinking about it all, the last 2 nights were the coldest it has been since i owned the car, both nights were down into the negatives so i thought maybe by chance i got bad gas somewhere and there was a piece of ice within the fuel system that had froze a bit and was causing it to starve for gas and die, so i put some HEAT in it. let it idle for about 30 minutes at the part store, died twice then somehow i was able to drive it about 10 miles home with out a problem. thought for sure the problem was fix! .. little did i know.

next day it was warmer so i thought for sure after the heat going through the system and warmed temps the problem should be fixed! nope. back to square one..

today i and a friend were doing some reading and alot of people were point toward the fuel pump rely located on the drivers side under the hood. in order front to back, its the master, fuel, (last one i cant remember which it was for) after thinking back i remember being able to hear the pump run, and now i hear it click when i turn the key but no further. we tried to jump the middle rely 'fuel' and it wasn't getting power what-so-ever to it. then was wondering if it was the master fuel rely located just ahead of this one. once we jumped that you could then hear the pump running and car would start.

assuming its that master rely that is out id like to get further info on other things to try before i go and drop the close to $100+ on it..

i'm being tight about it all because again as the title says, its my $800 winter beater. seems like every "common problem" the e30s had this one has wrong with it. may not be the right thing to do, but i have considered hooking up a switch with a inline fuse and simple jumping that rely but then i'm considered what else would be used in that rely. again i KNOW it isn't the correct thing to do, but it was a thought

Some help and guidance would be great, this is my first e30 so im not to knowledge full on them yet but surely willing to learn! thanks guys!
