OP First props to moms for for having excellent taste in cars.
I am with others in here, E36's while drive and handle great, have horrible interiors.
Have you considered an E46? Our Family car for 4 years was a E46, we owned from 75K miles to 150K miles and hardly had any problems with it.
Off the top of my head the only things I fixed on that car, HVAC Thermistor, cam sensor, serpentine belt tension and rear window regs. That is it, I did brakes, ties oil changes over its life.
All that said we just purchased an E30 as a family car again the wife DD's it and LOVES it.
I say get as new a 3 Series as you can afford. I was very impressed with my E46, my son has only owned E30 since getting his license and all have been rock solid reliable, as long as you go through them and do all the initial preventative maintenance to make them that way.Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride! -Hunter S. ThompsonComment

E30s are easy to fall in love with, and they're reliable to boot...
Hell I bought one 2 years ago with a knock; I've been tying to blow it up daily ever since and it just... wont... popComment

Your mum (it's got a 'u' in it, like colour) sounds like one cool chick. E30 all the way, sensible Hondas are for coffin dodgers and your mum sounds like first she has impeccable taste and second she has plenty of life left in her. A nice tidy little 318 Lux or similar sounds perfect.
But... surely fixing the E24 would be cheaper? It's worth getting the fault diagnosed, it could be as simple as a blown seal.Comment

If you get a newer one DON'T get anything with an 2008 N54. Those motors are crap.... every customer I have puts 2 grand into it on a regular basis. I just did a water pump on one today for 900 bucks and don't get me started on the $2000 injector replace that they ALL NEED!
I was looking into these motors for my e30 swap but with all the problems my customers have, I'm staying faaaar away from it.Comment

being that she works at mcdonalds minis and 2008 n54s are out of the question, the budget stops at about 3000$.Comment
