    Getting a good title.

It used to be common in Texas to take a rebuilt total to LA and title it there and then return it to Texas and retitle.it. Nowadays it like DUI or DWI convictions, The states talk to each other via computer. In Texas, if a theft is not recovered in 30 days the insurance company pays the owner(s). If it is recovered after that it is sold at a salvage auction regardless of the amount of damage. This leads to some fraud when a vehicle needs a $3000 AT rebuild. Hide it, report it stolen and then park it in an apartment complex lot six weeks later. "Boy they sure put a lot of miles on it and burned up the transmission!"
Insurance companies in general do not use salvaged suspension parts for repair because of liability problems. Same with air bags. An air bag totals a lot of cars that otherwise would be easy fixers. Salvage title or not, you should look over any car you're thinking of buying. A lot of E30's repaired for $12-$15K in their first year.

      Thanks for all the info!

From what I could tell in the carfax, the car has never been out of california. I think i've got a pretty good idea of what to check for. I'll see if the owner can come up with a believable story (stolen radio, damaged interior, etc).

I'm going to check the car out tomorrow with my other friend who knows e36s much better than I. Hopefully it works out.
