I found a transmission at a local yard with 57k on it.....Probably pick that up, install and then move it..... This way I can at least sell it outright and not feel like a douche'.....

The x5 is also known to have transmission problems. It's nearly the number one topic over at xoutpost. Luckily both the X3 and X5 can be had in stick, so I never have to worry about my transmission killing itself.

What transmission is used in the manual version? does it still utilize the same transfercase as the auto?

Side note: found a trans with converter for $1195 from a local salvage yard. 57k miles, 2 year warranty. That'll get me back on the road until I can dump it for something that not going to self implode.

IIRC, only the x3 was available with sitck in N. America back in the early/mid 2000's

OP should convert to stick and go drifting :D

edit: guess there was x5's in stick too
Well, folks, the day has come. You’ve shined your shoes. You’ve worn your good suit. You’ve called your wife and excitedly announced: “Honey, I’ll be late tonight!” You’ve refreshed TTAC for days, weeks, months, only to discover that now, finally, they’re here: photos of the all-new BMW X5.Of course, I’m kidding. You probably saw those X5 photos yesterday on Jalopnik and scrolled right past them, thinking: Do they have any Russia…

I don't know which transmission the manual X5 uses. Nor do I know if the tcase is the same for the automatic.

But yeah the first gen X5 (mine is a 03) came in both 5 and 6 speed variants.

That's what I like to hear. I have done a lot to the car to make it drive really well, replaced everything with OEM.....not cheap. To dump it because of a trans makes me sick to my stomach.

Well what does the code say? You say your mechanic keeps clearing it, but what is the actual code?

Trans issues were always a problem on the automatic X3s. However the worst occurred on the LCI models 07'+. My trusty 04' only ever needed oil and a valve cover gasket in the 6 years and 100k we had it. Personally I wouldn't hesitate to buy another, but that's me.

Ya, all the x3s we see with terrible issues are the 07+.

Older ones, IIRC the Austrian built ones, are just like big e46s.
