    Engine progress *pics*

Well, i havent been very active on this board. I usually use it for resources and information but i have a few concerns. One of them is the intake and exhaust valves are 2 different colors/ are they supposed to be *look at picture below* Well the pictures will be in order of events from start, to where i am at now. Question #2 is how should i go about cleaning the entire head? Rag and simple green? and what about the top of the engine block? Enjoy!
    Before
    Intake manifold removed exposing valves
    Valves exhaust&Intake
Pistons and Top side of engine block
Any information would be greatly appreciated!!
    Thanks Much,
    ~ Derek~

did you pull the head for a headgasket problem?
regardless, send the head to a machine shop and have them clean/pressure test and deck the head, that should take care of the intake and exhaust valves. if you have engough money maybe think about getting a complete disasbblem and replace the rocker arms, shafts, guides (if worn) and maybe a 3 angle valve job :P only do this if you plan on trying to work some more hp out of your car, that by it self would show neigble gains.

the reason why the intake valve is clean/white is because clean air and fuel is going by not leaving deposits, but when the combustion is complete the unburn fuel and exhaust which is dirty with desposits, leaves carbon everywhere including on the valve therfore making them black.

Yea, I would also recommend you take it to a machine shop.
They can disassemble it, and measure all the valve guides, check for warpage, clean, seat valves, pressure test, and shave it.

If the valve guides are worn, the seals will stop sealing and you will burn oil.
Valve seat sealing is critical as well.

If you want to clean it yourself, simple green will work, I use an air grinder with a buffing pad on it, to clean up the mating surfaces, then clean them with brake clean.
Be careful not to leave any crud on the cylinder walls or pistons.

Why exactly did you pull the head? What are your intentions?
              How many miles on it?

I pulled the head off the car cause it was leaking onto the exhaust manifold gaskets. I also wanted to clean, and replace all belts, pulleys, and have the head checked out cause the car has 136k. Just thought it was weird that a cylinder head gasket would go at 136k.
                Peace,
                Derek

                  Are you really a mechanic?????

Those intake valves are in the combustion chamber all the time. They get exposed to the same combustion as the exhaust valves. The exhaust valves might have desposits on the INSIDE where the gasses are extracted, but if you look at the picture, even the outsides are dirty.

I'm sorry but I cant offer an educated explination for why they are 2 different colors. skip the above mentioned work (3-angle etc) if you do not wish to make this a stroker/force fed motor. Checking the rocker arms and valve seals/guides is worth doing.

                  HTH,
                  Chris

yes i am a mechanic if you think about it the combustion occurs downwards with the buring face agaisn't the piston not the intake valve/ head. and then hot gases with deposits(rather unburned fuel *hydrocarbons*), pass by the exhaust valve not the intake, leaving deposits.

I appologize for my earlier remarks... they were a bit uncouth and less than polite.

I'm still skeptical, only on the basis that I have never seen a cylinder head come off a car like that??? They typically have identical carbon hazing/deposits/etc on both intake and exhaust. Not on the inside near the valve stems... just the outsides.

Anyways the links dont work anymore... maybe it was just my eyes... ;)

no problem, i only took a quick look at the pictures anyhow, and assumed they were what i have seen before, i would take another look but they are down, i'll back off my opinon untill i could look at them better, sorry fopr my remarks too.

sry for the crappy webservice, pictures seem to not work everytime i restart computer, go figure. Well maybe its better now and you can have a better look. Thanks again guys for the comments, and i wil def. take the head to machine shop to have checked out. still wondering about the valves, seems weird to me.

                            Thanks again,

i just had another look, have you ran water or a cleaner though your engine???? its possible that those could make the valves that colour, but dang i dign't realize they were that white, they should almost have a brownish colouring to them, i'd be intertested myself to find out why they so white.

                              possibly sodium filled????
