inspection light

my inspection light came on my 91 318is today...and i was wondering what needed to be done.. i have done the oil changes as required, should i take it in? and is that the same as an error light?

Mine's been on forever. I believe it's an automatic thing and it doesn't actually connect to any warning sensors directly.
