My dad wasn't a professional mechanic but he ran dump trucks for a living and we also lived on a farm. So it was just a matter of whatever broke, we fixed it. That could be doing brakes on the family pick up, repairing a water heater a haybailer or putting a differential in a 3 axle dump truck.

My brother was the car guy; 66 fastback mustang, 69 Mach 1 Mustang, El camino with at 454 in it, Boss 302. He got me hooked on cars and I bought a 66 mustang as my first car at 17. That car certainly prepared me for working on 25 year old cars!
Thank god, R3V was getting boring since the ginger kid wrecked his car. - Stonea

Grew up around them and restored European cars for years till I got sick of it.

          Nope.
None of my family really worked on their own cars. We were starting to get into BMW's: had a e36, e24, e38, and then I got my 93 325is. My rear wheel bearing went out and 5 years later that somehow that progressed to all the work my brother and I do, like engine swapping an e36 w/ bad motor, and soon to be putting the m60 in my e30. I question what i was doing with my life before than. And sometimes I question what I am doing now.

tbh lego is what gave me the confidence/insight to be able to take stuff apart and put it back together, car related or not. Actually cars are a bit easier because with lego you can't actually see what you're making; the vision has to be in your head.

also, related, I think we can do a much better job on the lego m3. For instance, 9v illuminated headlights say whatttt
