let the e30 warm up for a couple minutes, and find a longer route so the engine gets up to temp for a while, or get a honda, or ride a bicycle when the wheather is clear, or do a combination of all three and never worry about transportation again. The prius may costs $1000 but also most of your dignity bro!

And you are 28 dude. Your mother can't ground you anymore, you are allowed to take risks to benefit yourself. Motorcycles are great, cheap initial price, cheap maintenance price, cheaper insurance whether you believe it or not, way better MPG, and like someone said earlier girls <3 bikes.

Don't sit and let the E30 warm up by idling. Just drive it, it'll warm up faster.

I also have a couple mile commute to class. I used to DD my E30 and it has had an extensive overhaul on maintenance. Never has it let me down in the past seven years.

With that being said, and you being hellbent on not taking the E30, buy a motorcycle. You parents will understand if you're just using it to travel a few miles a day. I bought my motorcycle (81 Yamaha SR250) for $600. All it really needed was a new set of tires and brakes (another $100). Of course it didn't stay stock as that wasn't the plan, but I use it to commute to campus on nice days, I get 70mpg, and I get motorcycle parking right up front near the buildings (campus lots are almost always full). If you're going to buy anything, a cheap motorcycle is the only way to go that makes any sense.

+1, if you're gonna catch some shit for buying a bike get a 250 just to get your family used to you owning one

explain that they're so slow that a stock 90's civic would whip your ass from a red light (josh you know what i'm talking about, i had a rebel at one time myself) and your mom should be OK with it [probably]

Yeah you aren't winning any races against kids on big wheels.

But you can mob around town at full throttle and have a blast without killing yourself.
