    its a cancer...
get some of the chemical that turns rust into metal, then JB weld the rocker panel, and recoat with rubberized undercoating... it will look 1000X better and it will keep it from spreading.
but a $10 windshielf repair kit and use the epoxy supplied to fill that chip, it will prevent spreding and make it look a lot better.
I have fixed up cars with problems like these, and its always satisfying to see how much better it can be at the end of a saturday of work...
don't write the car off just yet! 8)

I just realized he was banned, oh well...

But, yeah - sometimes previous owners do stuff...

If I were you, I would start thinking about selling that car and looking for a new E30. That rust is only going to get worse. What Jordan said about rust is right, if you can see that much, there is most likely a lot more that you can't see. The stuff that you can is just what has broken through the paint.

It's not my fault, the rust was there when I bought the car. I bought it anyway because the rest of the car is in great shape. It's hard to find a good E30 in Chicago, cars get old fast around here.

I just bought the car 8 months ago, I don't think it's time to sell it yet but if you guys are telling my it's hopeless I'll just have to live with that.

                  wtf are you talking about?

you need to find out how bad it is, then you need to sand ALL of it out.
then comes the bondo. the bondo will look like shit. but cake it on then spen hours sandding it smooth. with the right paint it will be only noticeable when you look real close.
i have done the bondo deluxe job on two of my cars, we did it so that iwhen we had it painted we could sell it for more.
i knew the girl who bought one of them, and she never had a problem with rust again

if you arent going to fix it now, sell the car

don't look at the license plate light area!

For the windshield, yes the chip repair works well.

                          Any updates on this car?

I've been researching alot about rust... Rust is bad,but rust is VERY common on the rockers on E30s up north and in some other areas. If the rust is from within then it is bad, but IMO most late model E30s get surface rust on the rockers and start spreading up and in rather than the other way around.

Don't use bondo.. at least use high quality fiberglassfill.

You don't need to move. Just fly out there and drive back a rust free one from Arizona, or was it New Mexico. (true story, except i think it may have been a 2002)
