Online shipping calculators are a huge help. For anything under a few pounds, I use USPS and generally use flat rate boxes when I can. For heavier items I use UPS, but FedEx is good as well. Buy a scale to weigh packages. That way you don't have to go anywhere to get quotes. I use a $30 postage scale for lighter stuff and an Ikea bathroom scale for larger stuff.

Free boxes out of dumpsters are a great cost saver. Grocery stores often have good sizes. Lowe's, Home Depot and U-Haul have boxes for sale for cheap if you can't find one for free.

For large, heavy items like diffs or transmissions, use a rubbermaid container. Cardboard won't hold up to the weight. Drill holes and use zip-ties to keep the lid on. Wood bracing on the inside (2x4s) screwed into from the outside work great to holds things in place. Rule of thumb is, if you shake the package and can feel/hear things moving around, it isn't secured enough.

Greyhound is great for shipping large items like seats or body panels. This is the cheapest way to ship items like these. Only drawback is the buyer has to pick it up from the bus depot.

For packing in boxes, I get rolls of paper from my local newspaper. Their presses move so fast that they switch out the rolls of paper before they run out, that way they don't hit the end of a roll. These end rolls are generally recycled or given away for free and make great packing material. If you can't find these, newspapers are cheap and work as well.
