List of what to save when parting a car?

If all goes well I will be getting this parts car tomorrow. Sadly, I think it is in better starting shape than the current project but I don't want/need to take on another project at this time.

I hate scrapping a shell but I don't have the resources for another project and by the time I do have time/money it will have sat for too long to restore. I have space on my land but the HOA is unkind about unregistered cars. As I have found with my current project, restoring a convertible has some special costs that tend to not be cheap, and body work is expensive on any car. I'll have $3500-5000 in top/body work alone and enough if the interior is missing to make this a tough sell for restoration.

Not 100% certain what I will do with it but the short list of parts to pull/save for the current project or as spares are:

    • Any interior parts
    • Rear window assembly/regulators
    • Both front doors
    • Both front fenders (one slightly bent)
    • Rear subframe
    • Front strut tubes
    • Wheels, tires, spare
    • Top frame/cover
    • Cluster
    • Axles
    • Fender liners
    • Brake lights
    • Trunk liner parts
    • Battery
    • Antenna cable
    • Seat belts
    • Door panels
    • Blower motor
    • CAB brackets, control arms

Other parts that I don't want to send to the scrapper:
    • Brakes
    • Pedal Set
    • Bumper brackets/sliders
    • DME
    • Mirrors
    • Exterior trim
    • 3rd brake light

Tentatively trading the driveline, motor, trans to another R3v member for some parts he has for me.

What else is worth keeping? The last time I parted out a car it was in worse shape and I had no qualms scrapping it but it had no special/specific parts like a convertible has.

If you have the means and the battery box is rust free and the same for verts and coupes I would pay for that section cut out. My entire box is rusted away.

Id buy the fenders if shipping didnt kill me. Some things I am looking for though is a rear brake pad harness, the one prior to the pad, not the last bit of the harness. I am also looking for the triangle exhaust hanger on the rear of the trans as well. How is the window weather stripping? Check the top seals, and save all the hardware as we learned if you cant save the frame. I would save as much of the electronics as possible, the entire harness would be a tough sell, though I have seen some people looking for them, just not often.

the body and paint look pretty damn good on that car. if its good enough to buff and be presentable and rust free, i would probably abandon the car you are working on now and fix this one.

His is now in better shape and more complete. I would consider selling this as a roller to make some $$ back.

I am about $6-8K into the current car (counting uninstalled engine parts, etc.). Way too deep to change horses at this point.

Went back to paint for a punch list and HOPEFULLY comes back this week. I am checking on it after work today.

THis was before dropping it off:

I'll have to look but the leaky 3rd brake light in verts tends to ruin that area of the trunk. We take your sunroof drain issue and turn it up to 11.

I can pull those for you. I know that the PO started to pull some body harness parts but I don't know what is still there.

I poked around on it about 2 weeks ago (when I took the photos) and saw it last week when getting the (mismatched) front seats but I don't knwo what else he may have pulled or started to pull.

The whole frame is being kept. Most rubber is crap- I was all excited but the wipes are bad and the windshield top seal is gone. Have not examined the top frame itself but I am only holding out hope for mechanical parts- nothing rubber. And the canvas/window is in bad shape.

I might do that. I'd leave the pedals in place if I do that.

Other option is to trade it as a roller for some of the parts that I'd want to pull - subframes, strut tubes, wheels, CAs/CAB brackets.

I briefly entertained finishing the strip job and making it a (slow) track car but the thought of doing all of the work that I have done to the 89 on another car right away makes me depressed. And I am considering picking up an old YJ Wrangler as a next project (as the '89 draws to a close) so a 3rd car-in-progress will probably have me in too deep.

the shipping would prob be killer and they need to be rust free. Im not into dealing with body work, its expensive as you know. I thought about pricing new ones, just have not yet. Any chance the battery tie down is still there? The one on my white vert is gone thanks to the hack by the prior mechanic.

I'll know a lot more as soon as the car is delivered. Parts will be offered first to guys who have wrenched with me, helped me find parts for my build, and to the 'vert owners who have been posting in my build thread. EDIT: Clearly that includes you. end edit.

I won't have a general sale thread until those people have had a chance to vulture what they need.

                      Parts car arrived!

Trunk is also full of other parts, which I have not yet searched. He arrived late last night and I had to get my kids to bed so I tarped it and will look through it later this week/weekend.
