They are just an option. You can choose wheels out of a catalog and put whatever you want on the car. They make them to fit many BMWs.

those are the E39 530i sport wheels (in 17") and Z3 2.5i wheels in 16". they may have come on other Z3's in either 17" on the 3.0, or on different models
