    Weird Wining Noise

    Hi;
I took my car to work yesterday since I hadn't driven her after installing a new fuel pump. After installation I did run around the block to make sure she was working and all was ok.

When I was arriving my home she acted up with this wining noise. I thought it was the stereo so I turned it off but then realized it was not the cause of the noise. I left the car on and the noise was louder outside.

Here is a video I took (hope the link works).

    Any clues?

    Thanks!

    Victor

Sorry about that. This is the first time I upload a video in Youtube.

Any hints how I can "un-privitize" my video so you could all see?

      Thanks!

Sounds like a fuel pump to me. Never heard one so loud I would guess its defective or janky install.

        Nice E30.

          Thanks!
Doing further searching in Youtube I found a video where someone recorded an E30 with the same wining noise as mine. The video was pointing towards a "going bad fuel pump".

You mention a "janky install" and I'm curious since I did the installation myself (which could well be the cause of a janky installation ;) ). I used the same fuel sender I had on my car with the new pump I purchased. Could that be a cause? May I have overlooked something?

I have started the car in the past few days and no there is no wining sound. I'm a little scared to drive the car around without a better diagnosis.

Does anyone have a fuel pump substitute they could recommend? I haven't thrown away my old pump so maybe I could get a working pump using a non-oem one.

          Thanks for the help!

I am no fuel pump expert. Just know the sound pretty well. Typically they work or don't. I would see if you can get a replacement if you don't wanna possibly get stranded. Maybe its just a bad unit.

Yeah, it seems I got stuck with a new bad unit. :(

I did some searching and I came up with a DIY write up. A substitute pump the author recommended was a Walbro 255 Model GSS-340. Less than $60 to have shipped to my house. I could use the old pump assembly to do the replacement and connections. Then I'll remove the new defective one from the car and replace with the Walbro one...and hope it doesn't turn out like the URO one that's on my car.

                I miss driving my E30... :(

                Thanks for the responses everyone!

                  Just a helpful FYI...

WINNING is when you beat everybody,

WINING is when you drink too many fermented grapes,

WHINING is that noise your mother-in-law makes in the back seat....or the fuel pump.
