E30 Temp Guage not working HELP!

Hi I've got an e30 s50 swap and recently my temp and fuel guages have been acting up. Both of them went put at the same time a week or so ago but the fuel guage one turned back on. Sometimes fuel cuts out and I have no idea how much gas I have but the real problem is the temp guage. My caroverheated last week and I had no idea until it shut off. (Some sorta safety shut off sensor). I tried tightening up the grounds on the back of the cluster and they were already tight. So I thought before I start messing up other things in my car, it would be a good idea to seek some help. Where do I start?

There is no safety shut off. If the engine got hot enough to shut off by itself, you did damage to it.

Bad wiring would be my guess on the gauges though. Are you using an adapter for the swap or hardwired?
