My boss, the sales manager, left for VW.
He is without a doubt, the best boss I ever had. We got along great and he became a second father to me. I loved talking politics and money with him as we often agreed on all points.
Anyway, things are shaking up at work and while my position is rock solid, I am probably no longer a lock for a sales job at BMW. However, I am an optimist and think I can still probably push my way through the door with the new management (who also like me, just not as much...yet).
This brings up an interesting option for me though:
Do I A:
Take the sales job at BMW or VW
Advantages of BMW:
I know the product
I can relate to the high end clientele
I would rather deal with high end clientele then force people into deals
I could make more business connections.
Starting out at highline would be a huge accomplishment.
Many of the guys at work are idiots...I could probably advance quickly.
The top sales guy ($170k a year) is probably going to quit...that leaves $170k to claim.
Disadvantages of BMW:
Dealership is not run like most highline places (more pressure)
Slow traffic
Harder sells
Less markup (6-7% from invoice VS. EX: Lexus at 16%)
$1,000 flooring cost per car
Advantages of VW:
I'd get to work for my favorite boss (one of the best car dogs in AZ)
There would be much more traffic
Lower class people may be easier to sell
Higher markup
My boss would probably promote me quickly if I do well since he does play favorites
Disadvantages of VW:
Don't know the product
Can't make as many business connections
Trying to force people into deals (VW) may be harder for me then working with them (BMW)
We will see...I still have the rest of the semester to decide. Right now I'm 80% on sticking with BMW as long as I can land the job. I want to start out in highline and I want to start out with a product I know. Simply getting a job at a BMW dealership in a sales position is considered a tremendous accomplishment and to do it at 20 is almost unheard of...I wanna run with the dogs and see how I do.
