    m42 question

So today since I was off work my dad asked me if I could get his car (95 318ti) smogged, and so after getting it done once, it failed. The mechanic told me that if I get my catalytic converter changed it should pass, but he also recommended that the o2 sensor be changed. I went to the place I always go to for my car, and had the converter done but the o2 sensor could not be in today, and if i wanted they could special order it for me and have it in tomorrow. I retested w/ the new catalytic converter and passed, so yay, but now for my question.
-Since it's my dad's car, I don't know too much about it, but it does have an m42 correct?
-Also, I guess he had the converter replaced a couple of years ago, and now I had it replaced again. Does the O2 Sensor need replacing, and how hard is it to replace it myself?

    :(^SOLD^:(

dont know about that application, but every o2 sensor I've ever replaced is as easy as changing a spark plug. best to get an o2 sensor socket though, it has a cutout for the wires. Or just gear-wrench it. Again I dont know the e36, but the more modern the car, often has more than one o2 sensor, and they can be 50-200$ depending on application.

Theyre real easy to replace yourself so dont get hosed getting it done at a shop. It probably needs to be replaced if its been a couple years, depending on how much your pops drove the thing.

The O2 sensor is probably fine. That car will have a check engine light when it goes bad.

If it has an aftermarket catalytic in it, they only last a couple years. I'd recommend sticking out the money for a factory cat, it'll last another 11-12.

            1996-present BMW's have at least 2 o2 sensors. 4/6cyl have 2 and 8/10/12cyl have 4.
