    Vehicle Storage Units

Has anyone used a storage unit for storing a vehicle?

I see that some places offer vehicle specific units for vehicle storage, and they are like 10' x 20'. They are also cost a lot more than just a regular unit. Can you use a regular unit such as a 10' x 10'?

I've never used a storage unit so I'm not sure of their policies and restrictions for storage. I'm assuming hazardous materials comes into play?

Also, any other options for storing a vehicle is appreciated. I live in Northern VA and renting a place with a garage is proving difficult, and I don't mind paying extra to store the e30.

I would be more concerned with insurance and what happens if your vehicle is damaged or stolen while on their property.

If you have no other option, then yes I would consider it - but only after exhausting other resources.

Why don't you go and measure your car, and then you will know why it won't fit in a 10' x 10'.........

      Keep it slideways!!

Every time i have used storage, there is a clause in the contract that says you will not store combustible/hazzardous etc. materials in the unit. That is likley why car specific units cost more, not that the storage facility provides more. Like just insurance costs passed on to the customer.

Every place I have looked at here pretty much tells me that I can't store a car in there that isn't tagged and I cannot work on it there whatsoever. You would be better off finding a place with a garage, even if the wait is a little longer. I had to wait for a garage for my place, but when I did, it sure beats the shit out of going to a storage unit where access and usage is limited.

for about a year, i had my b63.5s project in a 10x20 unit. the facility was about a half mile from my home. one night, my wife and i hear several explosions which turned out to be rv propane cylinders exploding. turns out, some little 20 year old jackass set the storage place on fire. i was actually very lucky. my unit didn't burn but the entire row 20 feet across from it did. so did a few on the end of my row about 5 units down. in all, 4 rows of cars/rv's/trailers and 6 rows of storage units went up in flames.

i was within about a waffle hair of losing most of my collection of rare and irreplacable alpina parts.

needless to say, within the week i cleaned out my garage and moved my shit the hell out of there.

this story above is no bullshit.

I actually had trouble trying to find private garages to rent. Technically, if the garage owner is collecting rent, its considered a business and they may or may not have coverage for that. Or so I was told. Other garages had driveways that sloped down and if leaves happen to cover the drain at the bottom ... look out.

I gave up on that dream and instead rented two 10 x 20 storage units last year and had no issues with them whatsoever. My diving board equipped cars are just a bit under 15 feet long. I kept my comprehensive insurance coverage on the cars in effect while they were asleep. The facility was well lit, had cameras everywhere and was in a decent part of town.

I used to rent a garage. Owner said "don't work on your car here, wink wink. I used hand tools, made friends with the neighbors. Never had an issue. I felt more comfortable/safe there and it was 1/2 price

well, since you asked, there was actually a police press conference. the cop said that when they questioned him, he said he did it for the satisfaction of watching it burn.

I'm storing my M3 in a 10x30 storage unit this winter. The unit costs $160 a month, which is $100 more a month than what I paid last year for warehouse storage. But I get 24 hour access and I have the ability to wrench on it a little in the process.
