    I am confused

Like some of you may know, I just bought an 87 325 yesterday. I am not sure that it is an I anymore, but just a 325. The problem is that the tach reads 6500 red line, but the engine is most certanly an E engine, as well as the exhaust being single out. It even says that it is an E under the hood on a sticker. Can this motor rev up to 6500 or is it a different cluster in there? This car feels exactly the same as some I models I have drove, but my E car that I have has more torque than this one, makeing me think that again, this is an I engine. On the title for it, it says 325I as well. Someone help me out.

    Thanks.

      Is it a 4 door?

There was an 87 325i in the US, but it was a 4 door.

It is a 2-door. So the ecu is 027 for eta right? Also, the cluster does not work (fuel and speedo) so I am going to take it out. There should be a vin on that right?

It has an 027 ecu. Now why would it have a 6500k tach???

because the old one was broke and the previous owner replaced it?

That is what I think. I need to pull this tach so I will see if there is a vin on it to match it to the car.

....I meant what is the VIN on the car, I'll pull the build sheet and solve the whole E or I question.

Heres an easy way. take the valve cover off. look for 7 bearing cam and dual valve springs. Easier way, look to see where the oil filter screws in. etas go right into the block, i's go into the cooler.

87i was a 4 door. 87is was two door. I looked at your pictures and swore it was an e, and if it has an 027 ecu it has to be.

I agree. It is an E. Thanks for the help.
