It'd be tempting to switch to pop-outs for these. I worry about backseat passengers knocking into them though. Broad question for people with pop-out windows: Is it quieter at freeway speeds with them open?

with that said, on the highway with them open, there is noticeable wind noise, but its similar to having the sun roof open i guess except the noise is behind you instead of above your head.
personally, if your ac works well, i don't think there is a lot of reason to open your windows when you drive down the road.
i do think this is a cool project and hope this goes well for you o.p.. if not this project, hopefully something else cool. don't give up man.sigpic

Just a couple follow up thoughts. That linkage might be over kill - it looks super beefy (I bet it could hold 1000 pounds if it had to!). Now-a-days, a great source for linkages and stuff like that comes from the RC car/truck world. As far as the other custom bits, 3D printing would be my go-to for low volume stuff like that. holy crap! arizona and no a/c? i'd probably rather hit myself in the face with a brick.
having the pop outs open with the front windows isn't going to reduce front window noise. the car really needs a deflector of some sort on the A pilar. thats the only way to make an e30 quieter with the windows down.
take a look at a plymouth super bird or dodge daytona from '60 or 70. take a look at what their engineers did to reduce wind noise on the A pilar of that car. this is what an e30 needs. it would benefit a cabrio too. i know this because i have done a little experimenting with this and it makes a world of difference.
in fact, o.p.: why don't you experiment with my idea in the paragraph above. if you can come up with something to remedy this, i would certainly buy a product of this sort. try to keep the price under say 80 bucks. that is something i bet you would sell a lot of.
edit: once you get a good working prototype, the cost to manufacture a pair of parts would probably be less than 20 bucks. no expensive electronic parts. the product could me made from plastic or sheetmetal(aluminum-perhaps stainless but the cost would be higher)Last edited by flyboyx; 09-18-2016, 07:25 AM.sigpic

That specific joint is rated at 2875 lbs!! So yeah it is crazy overkill, but after sampling a few different appropriately sized linkages, they just seemed to small and made it look a bit tiny. These weren't thaaaaat much more expensive, and the filled it out pretty nicely. 3D printing did cross the mind, but it is still spendy and it looks like hell...
As far as a wind guard goes, I'm not really into changing the over all aesthetics of the car, just yet. I'm currently thinking about opening the windows even further than i have been to try and kill the noise even more than it does already.sigpic

I'd think a 3d printed cover for the mechanics would work ok. But it is a +$1000 investment and a LONG learning curve to do it right.
I could go on and on about 3d printing, as I've been doing a lot of it recently.
