I payed 6k for mine. low miles, mint interior, 1 door ding and some paint chips, a/c had to be converted. It needed suspension work only 'cause i'm picky.. I had to drive 5 hours to pick it up.

That's about the ballpark you would expect to see in northern california, especially if its in good condition. Keep in mind, when they ask 4500, you can usually walk away with the car for <4000. I normally would say suck up 500 bucks to get the right car since good e30s are becoming rare. The bay area seems to have a solid amount of e30s for sale on a regular basis, so it may be worth waiting around there.

Thanks a lot fellas! For all your helpful comments and suggestions. I will check it out and see what it has. I also found one, a 91 318is, 150k miles, asking 3,500. I might talking him down to 3,000. Wish me luck.:)

At 170k, what are the major changes that I would expect, like maybe a new clutch or suspension changes? If those weren't changed, is it still worth the price?
Mine's for sale in the Bay Area and it has 148,000 miles, new clutch and lightweight flywheel 2k miles ago, all new suspension 4k ago and is freaking fast around an autocross. And I'm looking to get around $5,000.

i paid $5000 for my 90 325is a couple of years ago. perfect mechanicals, perfect paint and body, lots of receipts. if it is a beautiful car, $4500 is not too much.

1st thing I would check is for rust, look in the spare tire well in the trunk under the carpet. Ask for documentation for when the timing belt was changed. If you dont see any leaks, i would go for it. 180k isn't too many miles for an M20 engine, they can go a long time and take a really good beating..
Also check all the bushings and shock mounts..Drive it and listen for any pops when cornering..
