Small pics but can give you an idea.

I think the same setup is used in a 540i. Here is a picture of one. I can't quite tell.. is it the same idea?

Yeah. What's basically been said - if you want to be different and do a lot of fabrication, go with the M60. If you want an all but drop-in engine swap with lots of support, documentation, and prior attempts and successes to reflect on, go with the 6.

I personally love the straight 6's in the 3 series - I'll be going with a 540i next anyways, so I'll have my v8 fun then.

isn't there some way of using m60 and m62 parts to make a 3.x liter that should rev like a ferrari v8. I read it somewhere and it sounded pretty cool. major port work and some other stuff. i'd say swap the v8 it looks so sexy in there. I can't imagine how it would pull my dads 540 pulls like a train and its an auto.

Put the 6 in the e30 and the 8 in the e36 and call it a day.

'Wish somebody around here had an M52 in an E30 that I could compare to.

I'm not afraid of fabrication. My son specializes in 3d graphics on the computer. Before he moved out to take a job in california, he built a computer controlled plasma cutter and left it in my garage. Comes in handy for making things like motor mounts and brackets.

I ran the car with the Ireland suspension in an autocross today. It was the first time I have driven it in a race environment. I must say I was surprised how well it did with the stock engine.

I think that after seeing how well this car ran with the stock engine that I will put the new engine in another e30 and then upgrade the suspension after I get it working. I don't want to be without something to race while I am building this. It will probably take 6 months or so

Here's another thought... has anyone rebuilt their M20 with 12 to 1 compression, wild cams, and a better intake? It would run race gas only, of course. I wonder what kind of power you could get out of it.
