    The price of paint

I was talking to my shop guy... where I'm going to get my car painted in march. He said that the price of paints (more specifically the blues/greens/reds and metallics) are going up 2 fold and probably will keep going up higher an higher..... obviously due to gas prices. How true is it that in the past 3 months, the price of paint per gallon has gone up almost 45%?

WELL, being that i'm not an expert at paint work , i'll tell you this , a few weeks ago i was quoted under 150.00 for ALL the paint i'd need to paint my DELPHIN GREY METALLIC cabby. Actually that quote was for a gallon of paint and all the reducers etc. etc. that i would need. This was at a reputable supply shop here in SOUTH CAROLINA.

Saying that you can buy paint for $150 is like saying you can buy a car for $1000, sure you can, but it's not the same as a $10,000 car or a $30,000 car.

There's a huge difference in price for different types/quality/brand of paint, so make sure you compare apples to apples when shopping around.

I can't comment on the price of paint going up 30% or 50% or whatever, but I know it's gone up alot in the last 6 months or so.

I've been shopping around for factory color paint to do a small repair on my wife's Impreza and have found that in general I'm going to get soaked for $30-40 for a pint. Maybe it would be cheaper if I was re-painting the whole car but it seemed steep compared to the last time I bought paint which was a few years ago.

i've noticed that in europe spary cans are way more expensive (like 10$+ for 1 can!!) .. so maybe there is a corelation between it and the price of gasoline?

I havn't noticed any major changes in the stuff I buy.

Quart of Dupont Chromabase - 38.00, I think the reducer for it is 20 bucks or so.

Can't speak for the Dupont or Sikkens clears... But haven't heard anything out of the ordinary.

Sad but true. Even the cheapie brands have a formula to make any BMW color. Price Glasurit, Sikkens, and the high end of PPG, Dupont, etc. Within PPG there are different qualities available. Six months ago Diamondshwarz was $300 p/Gal. Add the other materials and you're at $500 for a complete repaint. A gallon of quality primer is $100. The quality of the other materials is as important as the paint.
An E30 is a rather small car and you can sometimes paint one with half a gallon. 3 quarts gives a bit left over for panel repair with the same paint.

For price comparison it was 1300 dollars at COST for Dupont Alpine White to paint my car.

                        BASF was over 2000
