Maybe a privateer but no factory involvement except for Dakkar.

there isn't enough factory involvement in small rally circuits because the current participants don't want their field to grow, their afraid of the competition, they like winning. (PIKE'S PEAK -> Cough-CouGH!!!!)
...what hasn’t been done to an m20 yet?

uh if you notice the majority of wrc cars are 4cylinder turbos, awd and lighter, smaller cars. bmw doesnt make such a beast. maybe a 1 series but i doubt that would be light, awd or make that kind of power.

I think BMW simply decideded to concentrate their motorsport budget on F1 - which some (not me) consider the ultimate motorsport and touring cars - which are reletivaly similar to the road cars.

WRC rules allow constructing a 4WD 2 liter turbo racecars even if the company does not pruduce such a car for the road - everyone except Subaru and Mitsubishi does it. That said, to me it seems that only Subaru and Mitsubishi got a marketing advantage from their WRC programs invetments.

If you've noticed Mitsubushi is not even competing in the present series and Pugeot and Citroen are thinking of withdrawing also.

So that leaves the STi nearly unchallenged? Audi also participates in some rally racing but not nearly as much as Suby. Audi has a few rally-inspired comercials on TV from time to time. Somehow I'm still not running to my local Audi dealership...

If one were to build up a privateer rally car, what do you guy's think would be a good base car? I've always wanted to build a rally car and I figured a modded iX could be fun...

The Ford Escort mkII is one of the greatest clubman rallycars ever made! I dont think they ever made it to the states though. Is there much of a rally following over there?

                      Huge in Ireland.

Did you notice that the Ultra-expensive rally cars were often not as fast as the higly modded stock versions? All my best times were set with a production STi and every mod thy offered. I spent a lot of time with suspension setup though...

Also, if you have an xbox, check out Rallysport Challenge 2. Great graphics and the car handling is pretty realistic I thought. I was never good enough to win the good cars though and I never bothered to look up any cheats... Great game none the less!
