I agree with the other posters though, it sounds like you need to reflash the ECU to be happy with the lack of an automatic. I'm a bit surprised that they failed you for OBD codes not related to emissions though.
This is CA we're talking about. Any faults or anything not certified means automatic fail. Probably the only state where running clean isn't enough.

So far that is the cheapest route. $95 for a manual dme w/ ews deleted.

I though the auto tranny has its own dme? Honestly, the auto codes caught me off guard. The previous owner must have cheated smog when he sold it to me. I have already contacted two vendors, so I'm still waiting for them to get back to me. Thanks guys.

Get the car recoded to manual with an autlogic.. a "chip" might do the trick too, ask a vendor

Looks like you'll have to find a way to satisfy those two internal fault codes. Since they have less to do with the engine and emissions than they do the E36 OBD2 electronics, perhaps Bimmerforums or an E36 specific forum would be more helpful. Perhaps someone local to you can reflash your ECU if it's not something as easy as completing a circuit, etc.

E36 m3 auto to manual swap failed smog?

I know this is e36 related but I'm sure some of you have work on e36 before.

So I took my e36 m3 to get smog and the computer failed it. It passed everything except two codes for the automatic tranny. The car is no longer an automatic and there are no check engine light on. With an obd2 scanner the codes do show up on the scanner. How can I clear the codes?

By the way, my e36 m3 have a m50 manifold w/ the turner adapter kit. Just for future reference if anyone want to know if a m50 manifold on s52/m52 will pass smog or not.
Working...
