IPOD help someone?

so i just bought a 10 gig ipod photo
used off craigslist for my girlfriend
and the thing worked fine when i picked it up
but now its like, stuck in hold mode
and nothing works

anyone experience this?
im a total noob when it comes to ipods
so chances are im just an idiot
but NO, the hold button isnt set to on
so im not that big of an idiot at least

alright so i figured that out soon after i posted that, but now
when i try and upload music to it, it lets me get a certain amount on, and then it freaks out and my itunes locks up and freezes, and i have to unplug my ipod even though it tells me not to, and so i have to reset it and then none of the music i put on there is there

i try and reformat the ipod with the ipod updater but it keeps telling me it cant communicate with the ipod

the guy i bought it from said he'll give me my money back on monday, but id like to get this figured out if i can

its not my computer cuz ive had other ipods hooked up to it, and never had a problem transferring music
it might be the firewire cord, and im getting a new firewire cable tonight to try
so well see if that works

anyone have any other ideas?
