The car is more between 80% to 90% Alpina. It could've been pieced together as it does have the Alpina tags where they put an "x" on the firewall vin #

I don't remember what the door jamb tag said but there were a few issues about the car which just came up as plain odd. It's a nice car for a "certain buyer."

I personally wouldn't make payments on an e30m3 regardless of what's in it. Getting a loan for one would be outside the rules of a "traditional" car loan as well since it's too old and the blue book value on those doesn't depict the value accurately per se

Make sure the tranny doesn't have any issues with the syncros or any other things as they are not exactly easy to replace. Have someone run a compression check on the car and inspect the usual areas. You'll be paying around 13-15k for the car before other things will be done and at the end of the day it's not a 100% true alpina. When stuff goes wrong on it you can at least get some m30 and e30 parts to replace here and there but some of the parts may not be available locally and you would have to have them shipped in. Perhaps the issue with the steering lock has been fixed but make sure to check that out along with the oil and coolant sensors. Oil and coolant sensors coming on during a test drive is not a good thing in the least bit.

The interior door panels are mismatched front and rear. There's some extra alpina fabric in the trunk which points to someone "making the interior alpina" or trying to touch up something.

Do the windows work? Something didn't work when I test drove it and I don't remember what exactly it was.

Check with you insurance co. on how you can insure the car, get it appraised and make sure your county doesn't require it to go through emissions. It should be exempt by default but you never know. The car has straight pipes, not cat on it. Make sure it's also had all the paperwork for federalization done to it or you'll be coughing up more dough.

If you want to make this your daily or w/end car that's cool. However for something to use for auto-x and HPDE, this is NOT the candidate besides the price tag, you have the obvious case of the nose heavy front coupled with the battery being in front as well. I am guessing the car started life as a 316i or 323i and then went through the power metamorphosis

Hmmm. My bro in law bought an e21 b6 turbo. It had an late70's or early 80's turbo 2.8 big six. Turns out it was fake. Some guy in minnesota was making them in the 90's. It somehow made its way to Tulsa.

That car probably isnt original. and for 17k you could own an e36 m3. ;)

The VIN stampings are the only things that will prove its real.

Even if it is the fake wheels and fake ebay badges will be some cause for concern as to who owned it beforehand. It does at least have the original ugly ass rear spoiler that came with the type137 cars.

The Dealer was in the car with me at the time of the drive so I did not try to see what it could do. Besides I am going to have an E30 Guru look it over for me this week hopefully. I'll get my chance then ;)

Also I agree with you 100% on the price and have a few questions I need answered as well about this car before I deside how much to offer.

Also the only 2 reason I would really do this

1) If it is a 100% B6 then I would be willing to pay a premium for it's "uniqueness", but in current form it seems to me not to be worth the asking price. They would have to come back down to a resonable amount.

2) If it is a clone and the price reflected that I wouldn't mind not having any car payments and would most likely make enough money off the sale of my car to cover any upfront maintaince issues as long as the BMW guru gives the thumbs up ;) and then I would have a just another old BMW with fancy traits :D

My other option an still retain "cool like Rich" status
3) Forget this car and take out a loan for an E30 M3 and have lower car payments than I have now. :) or just buy another really nice E30.

All 3 are win wins for me will 1 and 3 really the 2nd not so much but if the price is right and the car is solid, that is a hot E30 I would love to have.

Did you see notice anything with the engine that would make you run away screeming? I know I'll find out but just thought I'd ask

How long did you test drive the car for? How hard did you get into it? Did you let it warm up? For e30s, I like to let them warm up, gently start to get more into the throttle and then see how the car idles etc. The oil level and coolant lights are not good signs.

Yes it has the alpina custom radiator. It had the alpina Vin tags as well. It could be a semi clone and I have my questions about it being 100% authentic.

For a car with an m30 motor and a dog leg that it nose heavy, you're only buying it for it's "uniqueness" and not for it's handling or potential. You can get an s50 e30 that will be a better bang for the back or simply get a 325iS which is still pretty nice to deal with and have money left.

Personal opinons vary obviously. If you have no issues spending 17k I'd rather get an e30 m3 that's well sorted out.

Don't forget that car will never be comparable to your 337 and it's just another old BMW with nice fancy traits :D

Rich your right it if is a clone then I would be better off building my own E30. may be an ix ;) who knows. Really that is the question now is this a true B6 body or a clone? You know I like the rarer cars and I would not mind buying a clone I just don't want to over pay for it.

Do you really think I have a shot at being as cool as you?

I talked to Micah last night and we agree. As far as this car is concerned it isn't gonna be that fast..... if you start to really bastardize it, it is just another e30 then. There are two other options.... buy an e30 m3 like you were looking for that is original with no questions as to it's authenticity, or buy a car like ours, an IS with ok miles that you can find engine parts for and won't feel weird customizing to your tastes. I wouldn't pay 8k for the car due to it's "questionable" add ons. It is cool, but then again most e30s are if done well.... I have no doubt in my mind that if you had an IS like Mark, Elan, or I, or an eta like micah, it would be just as cool and tastefully done. The problem is it won't be as fast as the 337 or as new. The b6 isn't a daily driver due to the parts.... our cars have parts readily availible and are quick to be fixed in ATL. You wouldn't be able to repair or customize as fast with the b6. Buy an e30 for three grand and build it if you wanna be cool like us!:p Then I can start leaving you in the dust!

I am the guy looking at this car. To tell you the truth beofre yesterday I knew nothing about this car but thanks to Rich, R3vlimited and the interweb I now know way to much about this car... lol

Yesterday when I drove the car is seemed to have no issues with any dash lights and it ran strong. About the only issue is it is way slower than my 337, Rich could have told you all that though.:p

So I want to join the E30 family and have been looking at alot of different cars before I came across this one.

Right now I would really just like to find out if it is a true Alpina with fake rims or a clone. either way I think the car is hot and might buy it, i just don't want to get raped and pay what a true 100% Aplina B6 would cost if it is not just that ;)

2.8's arn't that quick and i think they didn't have the engine mounted as far back as the later 3.5's so it needs a special Alpina rad ?

That car was on eBay more than a couple of times as well. I contacted the seller, and we exchanged several emails about it. When I started asking about things I thought would be tell-tale signs of it being real/fake, he stopped responding.

The fake wheels and the fake badges off ebay make it scream a knockoff. No mudflaps and now cowcatcher also scream it from those pics.
