    PITA Polishing

I spent several hours today working on a set of 16" lips (rims are 3 piece ACT 5 Lug). The lips were already broke down and I had spent a few hours of sanding previously. I figured I could finish the sanding and get started on the polishing......UM no!

When I first recieved the rims I couldn't understand why the lips were painted. Once I removed the paint I finally understood......The lips were nasty pitted. To make matters worse the lips must have been sandblasted before painting because they had a porous (Sp?) finish that is adding hours and hours of work.

this is what the finished looked like once the paint was removed.

Notice the difference between the upper and lower lips

It took about an hour to sand the upper portion

    More of the pits removed

    Almost all gone

I tried to polish after the last picture, but it came out real shitty. Some parts have "mirrored" out while every little pit that I missed shows up like a dull spot.

I'm gonna give my fingertips a week off and re-sand next week.

I've done about 10 sets of rims over the last few years, the sets with clearcoat still on them have turned out the best with the least amount of work.

Note to self.....If the lips are painted.....LEAVE THEM ALONE!

I hand-polished a set of EMPI 8-spokes for a VW Beetle that I built back in the 80's.

    I feel your pain.

That pitting is deep. What grit sandpaper are you using?

You may need to use a machine to get those out.
