    New ATM Scam alert.

This is why I always, always, always, cover my pin punching hand with my free hand when I punch in my pin at ATM's or gas stations.

Eric, covering the key pad isn't preventing them from grabbing your ATM info! As is stated in the article you posted as well as in recent TV news reports, the skimming equipment is easily mounted outside and (even worse) INSIDE the machine. In fact, they said the equipment can be installed in under 15 seconds at a gas station fuel pump. With this equipment, all account info AND your pin can be recorded or transmitted. This is rather disturbing, eh?

But they need the pin to access the account. By covering it from them (they either watch with a zoom in binoculars or with the camera) they won't be able to empty your account.

      Or am I incorrect?

This is not the case with the internal skimmers (based on the reports that I heard last night). The equipment is able to transmit both account and pin information. They are then able to generate ATM cards with your number and use them with your pin number. Part of the problem is that there is no way to detect the equipment hidden within fuel pumps. They can open up the face of the pump with a manufacturers key, place the equipment, hook up two wires, and then off they go...with your money.

..this happened to a friend of mine a year or two ago. I guess its finally getting into the open due to an increase.

There is no known preventative method for this type of scam.

Naw - your pinnumber is actually recoded on the car alond with the big long string of account numbers. What they offten do is mount on the a card reader IN-FRONT of the normal card reader - when you put you card in - it passes thru theirs and int the machine.

Ask your bank why they need your ATM card when you want to change your pin number...

So Lukas - you can stop covering your pin up....(from what I was told)

That is cool. NOT. That is some crafty work though, but I would like to beat the shit out of anyone who does that. I dont really know how a bank ATM would not pick up on this thing being installed, sure it is hard for the consumer to notice, but a bank employee? I don't know, but those bastards better get caught!

Unfortunately, this happened to me last summer

They started using my card on a Friday after bank hours and went on a spending spree until Monday. My account had a daily cash withdrawal of $500 (more for debit) so that’s all they got each day. In attempt to get more money every day they put empty envelopes into the machines. As soon as the bank opened on Monday they found the empty envelopes and froze my accounts. It took over 8 weeks to figure the entire thing out and get MOST of my money back. The bank gave me a printout to see which debit purchases weren’t and mine and so I got to see all the places where those bastards were shopping…strip clubs, bars, restaurants, and grocery stores. What a bunch of dick lickers; go get a job!

Anyway, THEY NEED TO SEE YOUR PIN or the information they receive is worthless. They either have a camera or someone watching from a far. Gas stations are bad for this both at the pump and the debit inside. Any debit machine could have one of these setups.

If this type of setup is present you will feel bumps at the top of the card imput. Feel before you put your card into any bank machine (even at your local branch). They can leave the device on for only a few hours and then come and take it off to get your info.

                  Cover your pin everywhere.

Yeah, I think I have less than that in there! The only time I eve have money in my checking account is if I need to use my debit card to order something online or pay my cell bill.
