does anyone else think that it is funny that mobile 1 (synthetic) went up in price with the rising gas prices.........yet it is mobile 1 synthetic!!!!! meaning not made from crude oil. just my observations

Actually they still require oil to produce synthetic oil from what I understand.

i think mobil 1 has group III base stock, which is a petroleum base stock. only a few oils like royal purple and amsoil are true 100% synthetic because they use a group IV synthetic base stock.

Mobil 1 sucks ass.

Try real synthetic oil if you that's your goal.

Castrol/Shell/Redline/Amsoil make some of the world's best syn oil.

I personally use Castrol TWS 10w-60 in my M3. And Castrol Syntec 5w-30 in the 740i. Both are top notch.

i wouldn't exactly say mobil 1 sucks ass. group III base stock 'synthetics' are still really good oils. i use shell rotella synthetic in my motorcycles and my wife's e34, and use chevron delo 400 dino in my truck. the shell rotella syn is a 15w40 group III synthetic that is about $17/gallon.

Mobil 1 is a Group IV full synthetic. Castrol and as you mentioned Rotella are Gp III hydrocracked synthetic oils. There was a big flap about Castrol marketing Syntec as a synthetic oil, and the regulations on marketing it as such. Nevertheless, Gp III oils have gone through the most processing, so I don't discriminate against it.

Me, I plan on running $15 a gallon Rotella in my engine swap. It has excellent shear properties at high temperatures.

Anyways, Mobil 1 is not crap. You only think it is because it is a popular oil. It is just as good as any other full synthetic. Plus Mobil said it made its biggest gains that quarter from its chemical production, not fuel although fuel profit was involved.
