      They were there. E53 for example is the X5 that will end this year to be replaced by the E70. All the numbers are used for different engine packages or body types. The Z4 roadster is the E85, and the coupe is the E86. Back when they were producing the E30, the codes E31, E32, E33 etc. would have been used in the factory to designate the different trim levels. They're not used now because there's no need for them. We can just call them all E30s and add any other pertinant information after.

              Ok, then a bad example, but you get the point. It's in order of design date. Maybe E33 was the first variation of the E30 designed after the 8 and 7.
