    starter bike

ive kinda got the itch for getting started with sport bikes. im 18 and dont have alot of cash but MAIN CONCERN is not to kill myself on one of these machines.

i know the dangers on one and im not planning on doing much other than crusin around this summer or having a few interesting weekends. i already know how do drive one as i have drivin a race dirtbike before... although that experience didnt turn out to hot as i beat myself up. but that was, as my uncle said, (he was teaching me to ride) partly becuase the bike was way to strong/difficult to ride than what i was ready for.

either way, im lookin for a cheap slow bike to get started on. anyone got any tips?

ideal starter bike: old piece of crap. dont even bother looking at the hot new race replicas, you will drop it at some point, either going fast or doing something dumb at a stop, and the new bikes will cost much more to fix. When I was looking for a bike, I looked at early 90's stuff under 600, bandit 400, honda CB1, nighthawk 650 (not under 600), FZR400. All the stunna bike guys will say "you can start on a [insert new geewhiz bike here] if you respect it", but if you talk to some real riders, guys with experience and track time, they'll tell you what I just did.

I used to have a big hard on for a bike, then I got a friend to teach me how to ride on his Suzuki SV650, I really lost the desire. Its fun, but I'd rather spend money on my car, which I can wreck and have a good chance of surviving intact

Get a GSX- R, small bike short wheelbase, can be had for like 2 grand with higher mileage, was the first bike I learned to ride on. I still don't own one because mom bitches that I have to finish college before I "try and kill my self", maybe she thinks i'll realize they aren't safe before then.

Seriously people, always wear a helmet, I just attended the funeral of a guy that was killed at bike week in Daytona because him and his buddies didn't want people to look at them like they were tools wearing one. Guy pulled out in front of him from a side street and he layed the bike down at nearly 70mph after locking them up. It's usually not the rider's fault when there is a motorcycle accident, ride defensively.

lol do NOT get a gixxer for your firs tbike!

if i were you i'd get an older 500 or 600cc sportbike, the weaker ones

like kawasaki had the zx6r and the zx600r. get the zx600r

              for yamaha, get an fzr600

for suzuki, get the katana 600

for honda, get an interceptor (vfr) 500, or an old cbr 600 f2 or so

def take msf, def get proper gear

From what I heard the Suzuki GS-500's are excellent starter bikes. Their cheap, sporty, and reliable.

Alright, I will throw in my 2 cents. If you MUST have a sport bike, then I recommend a Honda over the other makes and as far as size goes, I wouldn't go any less than 600cc to begin with, it doesn't take long to get the hang of riding one and you will be wanting more power very soon. Especailly if you ride with other people that have bigger bikes with more power. Lighter bikes are not too good on the open highway as they are buzzier, and wind shear as well as big trucks pushing air can really move you around. I know from experience.

I sold my Harley last year at great emotional cost to me. I loved that bike almost as much as I love my wife (let's don't get started with the comparisons here). '97 Bad Boy edition springer softail. If you are not sure what this is look it up. Man, it was incredible owning a Harley. I love speed and handling and driving fast, but I agree with the other guys, keep THAT on four wheels. The Harley experience is like no other, cruising is great and as for power, my bike was a hoss. I got mine at such a deal I couldn't pass it up, but I know that they can be very expensive. Maybe down the road. Anyway, I guess I just wanted to reminisce a little, sorry for the long reply.

I sold motorcycles last summer before I left to go to Boot Camp for the AF, anyways I would highly suggest a CBR600 F2 or even a F3 if you have restraint. It seems from the used bikes we sold that the CBR's held their value a little better than other bikes. My first Bike was a Kantana which was good, but it was big and heavy compared to most sport bikes, but I came from riding dirt bikes for about 5 years before I even thought of a street bike. Also take the MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Riding course, it saves you 10% on your insurance which is going really expensive for full coverage on a sportbike. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

Smoove1 - The Ducati 999 is a sweet ass ride, although it rides completely and feels different than any Japanese Bike I have rode. One of the benefits to selling bikes you have to ride them all..
